Kingfisher Substitute
FeatherDescription
Bright cobalt-blue feather used as cheeks on full-dress Atlantic salmon flies — set in front of the jungle cock eye. Real kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and blue chatterer (Cotinga cayana) are protected; the standard substitutes are blue-dyed swan or goose shoulder cut to shape, blue-dyed hen hackle tips, or pre-made coastal substitute feather sets sold by salmon-fly suppliers.
