Half Pint Midge

Description
The Half Pint Midge is a modern, bead-head midge pattern designed to imitate chironomid pupae, one of the most abundant and consistently available food sources for trout in rivers, spring creeks, and stillwaters year-round. Midges make up a significant portion of a trout’s diet, particularly in cold water, winter months, and heavily pressured fisheries where fish key on small, high-protein insects.
The Half Pint Midge can be described as an enhanced Zebra Midge, combining a slim, segmented profile with subtle flash and a tungsten bead for rapid sink rate. Its compact body closely matches the natural proportions of a midge pupa, while the ribbing suggests segmentation and durability. The small pearl Krystal Flash wing buds imitate trapped air or emerging wings, an important trigger during the pupal ascent.
The addition of a tungsten bead allows the fly to reach the strike zone quickly, making it highly effective in deeper runs, tailwaters, and technical nymphing situations. Simple, elegant, and highly functional, the Half Pint Midge excels as a dropper fly, part of a midge cluster, or as a confidence pattern when trout are selectively feeding on small subsurface insects.
This fly is especially effective when fish are refusing larger nymphs and demanding precise, realistic imitations, earning the Half Pint Midge a permanent place in many anglers’ midge boxes.
Materials
- Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier Thread.
- Thorax: Black Superfine dubbing
- Bead: Nickel Tungsten bead 5/64-inch.
- Tail/Wing buds: Pearl Krystal Flash, midge size.
- Hook: Scud/Emerger Hook
- Rib: Silver Ultra wire, small.
Tying Instructions
- 1.
Start black UTC 70 denier thread immediately behind the bead, wrap rearward a few turns, and remove the tag end.
- 2.
Prepare midge-sized pearl Krystal Flash by cutting 3 full-length strands and folding them in half to make 6 strands.
- 3.
Tie in the Krystal Flash on top of the shank with a pinch wrap at the rear of the bead, keeping it centered on top.
- 4.
Bind the Krystal Flash down into the hook bend with thread wraps, then bring the thread forward to about the hook point.
- 5.
Trim the rear Krystal Flash to form a short tail about half a hook gap long.
- 6.
Tie in a 4” piece of small silver Ultra Wire by placing the end up into the bead on the near side and securing it with thread wraps.
- 7.
Let thread torque move the wire to the far side of the hook, then build a very slim, slightly tapered thread body that thickens subtly toward the bead (avoid overbuilding).
- 8.
Rib the body with the silver wire using open spiral wraps (about 5–6 turns) up to the back edge of the bead.
- 9.
Secure the wire behind the bead with thread wraps, then “helicopter” the wire to break off the excess close.
- 10.
Apply a small amount of black superfine dubbing (or black Zelon) to the thread to form a short, thin dubbing noodle (keep it sparse).
- 11.
Wrap the dubbed thorax: make a few wraps behind the Krystal Flash, then wrap in front of it, finishing behind the bead to create a small thorax and pin the flash back at a nice angle.
- 12.
Whip finish (4–5 turns), seat the knot, and cut the tying thread.
- 13.
Trim the forward Krystal Flash “wing buds” so they extend about halfway down the abdomen and angle slightly rearward.
