Top Secret Midge

intermediateemergermidgepupawinterspringtailwatertroutsmall fly

Description

The Top Secret Midge imitates a small midge pupa or emerging adult in the surface film, especially on tailwaters and slow seams when trout are feeding selectively. Its slim thread abdomen, sparse trailing shuck, fine wire rib, and slightly fuller dark thorax keep the profile simple while giving just enough segmentation and contrast for tiny sizes.

Tying Instructions

  1. 1.

Secure the scud/emerger hook in the vise with the shank level and pinch the barb if needed.

  2. 2.

Start the black thread one eye length behind the eye and wrap back with smooth, touching turns to the start of the bend.

  3. 3.

Tie in two or three strands of midge-size pearl Krystal Flash at the bend as a sparse trailing shuck about one shank length long.

  4. 4.

Tie in the extra-small silver wire at the bend and bind it along the near side of the shank to keep the abdomen even.

  5. 5.

Wrap the thread forward with light, even tension to form a slim tapered abdomen ending about two-thirds of the way to the eye.

  6. 6.

Spiral the silver wire forward in open turns over the abdomen and secure it at the front of the body.

  7. 7.

Helicopter the wire until it breaks cleanly and cover the tie-off point with a few thread wraps.

  8. 8.

Dub a very small pinch of black superfine dubbing onto the thread and form a compact thorax just behind the eye.

  9. 9.

Build a neat black thread head without crowding the eye.

  10. 10.

Whip finish and apply head cement.
