Description

The Conehead Woolly Bugger is a weighted streamer that suggests leeches, small baitfish, and large aquatic nymphs. The brass cone helps it reach deeper runs, lake edges, and reservoir drop-offs, and gives the fly a diving action when stripped or swung.

Tying Instructions

  1. 1.

Pinch the hook barb, slide the brass cone onto the hook with its cavity facing rearward, and seat it against the eye before securing the hook in the vise.

  2. 2.

Start the thread immediately behind the cone and wrap a firm thread dam to hold it against the eye.

  3. 3.

Lay a thread base back to the bend, stopping above the hook point.

  4. 4.

Tie in a black marabou tail at the bend, keeping it about one hook-shank length and securing the butts forward to build an even underbody.

  5. 5.

Tie in the copper wire along the near side of the shank with the wire extending rearward from the bend.

  6. 6.

Strip the fibers from the base of a black saddle hackle and tie the stem in at the bend with the dull side facing the hook shank.

  7. 7.

Tie in the black chenille at the bend and advance the thread to the rear of the cone.

  8. 8.

Wrap the chenille forward in touching turns to form an even body, then secure and trim it behind the cone.

  9. 9.

Palmer the saddle hackle forward in evenly spaced turns and secure it behind the cone.

  10. 10.

Counter-wrap the copper wire forward through the hackle, rocking it between fibers, then secure and helicopter off the excess.

  11. 11.

Sweep the hackle fibers rearward and build a short, neat thread collar against the cone.

  12. 12.

Whip finish behind the cone and apply head cement to the thread collar.
